The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
