Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
