The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
