TikTok Grants The Community Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the platform announced that it now features more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement comes amid a increase in content created by AI, fueled by new AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this output is deemed mass-produced AI material, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, including digital art to educational videos, and we want to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as artificially created. In total, over 100 mn videos are added to the platform each day, making AI content a limited percentage of its total content library.

User Control Features

Users will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they see by opening the content preference feature in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the setting cover current affairs, clothing, beauty, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s rules require content makers to tag lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

In addition, the platform will now attach an artificially created label to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing artificial media. This step is designed to deter users from attempting to circumvent the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is furthermore establishing a $2 million awareness program for professionals and organizations to create informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will support educational bodies specializing in teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has defended its content review process, following debate over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the UK. It is planning to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most harmful content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
